PACKAGE: 50+ women
Between 1900 and 2000, the life expectancy at birth increased by 62%, from 47 to 76 years. For example, a woman turning 50 this year who is free of cancer or heart disease can expect to live to 92, but the average 65-year-old woman can expect to live to 84.
Typically, a woman begins to age when she reaches the end of menopause or when hormonal changes occur that influence certain body functions. However, old age is influenced not only by menopause, but also by overall well-being, a healthy lifestyle, activity, humor, sociability, and thinking about old age.
The menopause
Menopause is the medical term for the last menstrual period, but it is also commonly used to refer to the months or years preceding and after the last period. The last period is often around the age of 51, but it can occur as early as 40 or as late as 58. In the years preceding menopause, the regular monthly generation of hormones ceases, and eggs stop developing. As a result, the menstrual cycle ceases, and periods become irregular. When the ovaries ultimately stop functioning, menstruation ceases.
What problems can occur?
Menopause-related problems provide no health hazards. It is easier for a woman to accept menopause as a normal part of life rather than something that makes living difficult. If she finds it too much, she should consult her GP or gynecologist, who can prescribe medicine to alleviate some symptoms. A woman should consult a doctor if she sees brown discharge or bleeding between periods, if her periods are lengthier, or if they return after six months of absence. These could be symptoms of cancer.
The 50+ Woman package is recommended for ladies over the age of 50. In addition to the standard package (cardiovascular health assessment, liver, pancreas, kidney health, blood sugar control, electrolyte and mineral testing, and thyroid health), it concentrates on women’s hormone balance.
