PACKAGE: Coeliac disease
Coeliac disease is a hereditary autoimmune gastrointestinal illness caused by gluten sensitivity. If left untreated, the mucous membrane of the small intestine will damage and change, resulting in decreased intestinal function and impaired food absorption. The coeliac disease mostly affects the small intestine, causing digestive symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, and stomach pain. Weight loss, anemia, osteoporosis, and a variety of other disorders can result from the disease’s impairment of food absorption
The disease is relatively common, affecting approximately one out of every hundred people. On average, it can take up to 13 years to be detected. Symptoms may emerge several days or weeks after consuming gluten. This is most typically found in wheat, rye, and barley, but it also appears in spelt, oats, semolina, and other goods. Coeliac disease is frequently misdiagnosed because its symptoms are commonly confused with symptoms of other gastrointestinal diseases, particularly irritable bowel syndrome.
What are the symptoms of celiac disease?
Symptoms of the disease can take numerous forms, are typically non-specific, and vary from person to person. Some conditions are disguised and do not exhibit normal symptoms, so most people are unaware of them and accept them as a part of life. The most typical symptoms of celiac disease are soft stools or diarrhea, followed by constipation, abdominal pain and cramps, bloating, a persistent sense of exhaustion, migraines, and headaches. Low serum iron and anemia are prevalent. Osteoporosis may also be present in cases where the disease is detected late. Celiac disease should also be investigated in situations of depression and infertility. Skin lesions are also common in untreated celiac disease.
Celiac Disease Blood Tests
Blood testing can confirm celiac disease in the laboratory by detecting the presence of certain antibodies. Barsos Medical Centre provides professional and swift tests to determine the presence of antibodies. Visit us if you are experiencing symptoms such as bloating, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, headaches, recurrent anemia, or if a member of your family has been diagnosed with celiac disease; if antibody levels are positive, the diagnosis must be confirmed by gastroscopy and biopsy of the duodenum and stomach lining.
Test procedure
Patient’s venous blood samples are collected at our laboratory and forwarded to other laboratories. Following laboratory analysis, each patient will be given a report to take to their physician. The doctor will develop a strategy for additional testing and therapy. Coeliac disease is typically treated with a strict gluten-free diet.
Patients can also schedule an appointment at our gastrointestinal outpatient clinic, where a doctor will provide more thorough advice and discuss the results.
